Songs that remind you of books

Hello readers!

Remember Top 5 Wednesdays that I used to do last year? Well the group sort of dissolved but some of the members have been trying to pick it back up by suggesting posts for the whole month. One of the topics for July happened to be "Songs that remind you of your books"

I looooove associating music with books, but it can be hard to organize playlists for sure. Especially if you are writing books. I feel like there is always new music coming out that relates to the emotion when fleshing out a scene in a book and as the writer you want to scream it louder than just adding to your favorite songs list does.

So instead of combining all the music I associate with many books into one post, I'm going to do multiple posts dedicated to different books.

For my first post, I'm going to post the ever-growing playlist I have for one of the two books I've been working on writing for a few years now.

This book follows our main character, Vesta, who is a succubi that landed her way into an assassins guild. The world is divided between what we know of planet earth now, and a parallel universe only available to the super natural and the humans that were trapped in it.  As Vesta navigates the two worlds, and the conflicts between gods and titans, she finds herself admits betrayal and meeting her end. There is a ton of mythology packed into this book that I've been really enjoying diving into and piecing together for this story.

Vesta herself operates solely on passion. She is fully indulgent in her sensuality and uses her graces as a means to successfully execute her targets. A lot of the songs that In This Moment perform really fit into the Black Widow persona that Vesta embodies.

Whore-  The song is specifically talking about a girl that has defied the odds that she would survive because she is just used for her entire life. It really speaks to Vesta's heritage as a succubus and being labeled as 'only good on her back' that fits into a whore's stigma. Through the song though it's like its the POV of the whore understanding her power in the specific moment and that she is her victims addiction. This also bleeds into our next song:
Sick Like Me- Again, this song fits into the themes of fueling desire to gain control. It's Vesta's 'super power' and what she learned to thrive on to get to where she is.
Adrenalize- This song I think starts to blur the line of Vesta using her sexuality and indulging in it for her own pleasure. She's a pan, poly-amorous icon that doesn't really stick to one person to hold her down but instead embraces passion and the people who enjoy it.
Oh Lord- This song in specific relates to a scene that is a huge spoiler for the book but I think really encompasses where Vesta starts to find her role as the hero in this story.

The next character I really feel was imagined through music is Ouranos. He is the head of the assassins guild and a dark character. A lot of his past is fairly hidden due to time and the remote way he lived his life.

The Widow by Mars Volta- Ouranos has gained a bit of a reputation as the boogie man, since he can pass through shadows and blend into the dark. This song blends his "Freddy Kruger" into his wraith-ness.

Quite a few of Arctic Monkey's songs match Ouranos's personality with their dark and coffee shop band sound.  He pines after Vesta, but also is reserved because he knows her agency and doesn't feel like he is worthy.
Do I Wanna Know- The lyrics have portrayed Ouranos's feelings towards Vesta. Although he is her superior, he keeps his authority at a distance from her because she fuels his emotions. He deep down wants to show her how much of him he would devote to her.
Suck it and See- This is the musical number for Ouranos's one-sided relationship.

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails- Specifically this version of this song fits Ouranos and where he lays in the entire conflict.

Another artist that I feel like has a few songs that fit into this playlist is Marilyn Manson.
Cupid Carries A Gun- The lyrics of this song remind me of Vesta. Cupid as the god of love, and Vesta being a succubi are somewhat inter-changable here, as both are symbols of desire. It fits a bit more post a pretty big event happening in the book.

Considering the main conflict of the book relates a lot to Gods & Goddess and to some extent, religion, another band that lends to great music material is A Perfect Circle.
PetCounting Bodies Like Sheep- These songs are a great match for a lot of the climax of the book and really where the main conflict lays.
Judith - Another song that is great for our main plot line.

I could go on and on for this book specifically. I do have a spotify playlist that has the rest of the songs and is the most reliable place for updated song list.
