Review*:
My over-all rating is a 3.5 for this book. I prefer to Shadow & Bone trilogy over this series so far.
I enjoyed the story that Bardugo created within this first book. It had awesome character arcs and the story was easy to follow. Typically I don't care for multiple POV, but with the size crew we had and the distinct differences of our characters, it was easy to follow along.
Bardugo's writing definitely felt more mature telling the Dreg's story. She has a really solid story and has mastered the basic format of story telling. With switching POV and really relaying details and mannerisms that belong solely to one specific character was a great way to alter the perspectives and really drive the team dynamic that makes this story so appealing.
There isn't one character within this story that you really truly ever connect to. Each person tells the story of how they are broken or what has led them to this minute and that they cherish. These details are very different than what I felt like was built with Alina, who seemed like she wasn't whole until she unleashed her powers.
I do think the relationships in this book have a nice variety but could do with a bit more of a burn. I thought that Mattheius just hammering in his hate for Nina for the first good chunk of the book didn't quite transform into the fierce passion he had for her towards the end of the book. There also felt like there was a lot more left on the table regarding the back story of their relationship that could have propelled the pair of forgiveness and learning to re-trust each other. Inej and Kaz have a nice banter, however I have a hard time seeing Inej's dream including Kaz. The longevity of the relationship doesn't seem like it will last.
I will most likely finish the series since there is just one other book. I do think if I never did, Six of Crows is a great story on it's own and I'd be satisfied ending it here. Nothing really stood out to me about this story.
