Book Review: Sightwitch

Although I included the disclaimer there may be spoilers in my review, I think I managed to avoid giving away any part of the story outside of the formatting.
I ultimately gave this book a 3 heart review, however it's probably closer to a 2.5, I just figured it'd be easier to round up.

Synopsis:

Before Safi and Iseult battled a Bloodwitch...

Before Merik returned from the dead…

Ryber Fortiza was a Sightwitch Sister at a secluded convent, waiting to be called by her goddess into the depths of the mountain. There she would receive the gift of foretelling. But when that call never comes, Ryber finds herself the only Sister without the Sight.

Years pass and Ryber’s misfit pain becomes a dull ache, until one day, Sisters who already possess the Sight are summoned into the mountain, never to return. Soon enough, Ryber is the only Sister left. Now, it is up to her to save her Sisters, though she does not have the Sight—and though she does not know what might await her inside the mountain.

On her journey underground, she encounters a young captain named Kullen Ikray, who has no memory of who he is or how he got there. Together, the two journey ever deeper in search of answers, their road filled with horrors, and what they find at the end of that road will alter the fate of the Witchlands forever.

Set a year before TruthwitchSightwitch is a companion novella that also serves as a set up to Bloodwitch, as well as an expansion of the Witchlands world.

Review*:

This novella was kind of meh for me, so this review will be pretty short, though I do 100% agree that it is necessary to read prior to Bloodwitch. There is a lot going on.
The narration in this book switches from third person multiple POV to a diary format multiple POV. I have no gripes with journal entries, however when we switched the POV the only indicator was the year which was confusing during the Ryber to Tanzi swap. Then when we get a POV switch with a date stamp on it, sometimes there will be a line break that just switches back to Ryber.
As far as the characters, I didn't care for any of them. Tanzi's POV didn't feel very necessary despite it being to try to familiarize us with Ryber from an outside perspective. We could conclude that Ryber is a rule-follower without the handful of sections of Tanzi's POV.
The pacing also did the usual super slow beginning with a faster paced ending. I ended up getting through 60% of the book by scanning the paragraphs rather than my usual actually digesting what was going on. At this point in the series, since this is a common trend I run into I wish I could pinpoint why her writing tends to slow down for me but I can't quite figure it out.
The story itself was cool, we saw two parallel perspectives at very different times from two separate people. This was definitely Ryber's story but without the past POV there wouldn't have been much point. I'm very curious to see how the information we were given will fuel into the rest of the story because there was a lot of history added in.
I don't have much else to say about the book. I was originally hoping to finish Bloodwitch by the end of March but I think I need a little break from the series before I can dive into another book.
