Book Series Review- Percy Jackson & The Olympians
Hello readers!
Although I'm probably about 14 years too late for this target audience, I wanted to talk about Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. I started these books last fall and finished the series this summer as part of the N.E.W.T.s read a thon.
In my opinion, Rick Riordan is a brilliant author and what he's doing with Disney Hyperion and assisting publishing more Middle-Grade books about less popular mythologies is amazing. It adds a lot of representation for children of different backgrounds into pop culture.
For this review, I will be grading the series as a whole on my typical 4 point scale and then giving each book it's own rating.
Entire Series:

Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief- ♥♥♥♥♥
I never saw myself reading this series, but I am super glad I decided to pick it up. I've always been a fan of mythology, specifically Greek, and the way that Riordan took the ancient stories we may or may not be familiar with and so simply changed them to fit this story was amazing. He really added in the little details too, like Poseidon being the father or horses and how to alter an ancient weapon to fit into modern times. This first book was super simple, a quest to the Underworld and along this journey so many more possibilities open for the rest of the series.

Percy Jackson & The Sea of Monsters-♥♥♥♥♥
For the record, this is the only book in the series that made me get teary-eyed and that was specifically because of the introduction on Percy's half brother, Tyson. I have such a soft spot for big, mis-understood characters like Tyson it tugged on my heartstrings so much between the prejudice from society and even Percy. In the series though, this one wasn't my favorite book. I felt myself get a little lost in the story and it felt the most stagnant reading it. I did enjoy seeing Percy grow up a little though, in like a "I'm maturing into an adult." kind of way.

Percy Jackson & The Titan's Curse- ♥♥♥♥♥
This book might be my favorite, if not it's a close tie. Although Percy showed a little bit of his arrogance by just assuming he would be on this quest, I mean the books are named after him, he also was able to realize that sometimes he needs to rely on others as well. I absolutely loved Artemis and her Hunters, though I found Artemis a little arrogant, Zoe was amazing. I didn't think I'd like her at first but I definitely felt all the feels when Artemis turned her into a constellation at the end. It was also really cool to see Atlas and some of the lesser-known myths be brought into the story.

Percy Jackson & The Battle of The Labyrinth- ♥♥♥♥♥
Another tie for favorite, I really liked a lot of elements in this book. First off, Annabeth was in charge of the quest, which was cool. I loved seeing her geek out on architecture and puzzles. At this point though I started to get a little tired of the "looming"-ness of Kratos and Luke. I was ready for some action and we did get some at the end of the book.
I think my favorite character in this book was Calypso. Her story in this was so heartbreaking

Percy Jackson & The Last Olympian- ♥♥♥♥♥
This is such a heartwarming ending to the series. I feel like it was obvious Percy would survive somehow, despite the prophecy shaping up to be about him. Luke ultimately being the hero that saved Olympus was a great twist as well. It gave a great message to not give up easily on those who may need us most. Percy's choice to not be immortal was straight out of a disney movie, but it was one of those aspects that made Disney movies so love-able. Being able to do the noble thing. Although Percy did it partially because of Annabeth, it was still his decision to not accept for something bigger and better.

Over all the entire series was a super good read. I felt myself fan-girling for a lot of the characters. It was really awesome to see traits of "lower" gods as well within the book. I want to give a special shout out to Ethan, not only because that's my husband's name but because he ultimately understood that although Nemesis had a reputation, there was more to her than jut revenge.
If you guys are looking to nerd out over re-creations of Greek mythology like I am, check out God's School. It's a super cool art project by French Artist Gaylord Cuvillier Libessart. It's like a mixture of Monster High & disney's animated Hercules.
