Book Review- Nimona

Hello readers!
I'm a day late on this post, but I've been trying to cram in as much reading as possible before the month and the N.E.W.Ts are over. I still have 3 books to finish to make sure I pass.
Today's review is going to be short and sweet.

Synopsis:

The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it "a deadpan epic."

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Review*:

I've tried reading this comic a few times, and I was finally able to finish it. Overall, I didn't really care for it, so I'm glad to have finally finished it. It was too short to really break into a pros and cons list, though I will list out my favorite and least favorite aspects of the book.
What I really loved about the entire story was Lord Ballister Blackheart; he's a really great character even though he is introduced as the villain. He starts off as this seemingly useless bad-guy because his "evil plots" are pretty tame compared to the stuff Nimona comes in with and tries to talk him into. However as the plot progresses and more sinister things happen to the "peasants" we see that he's not much of a villain.
The backstory between Blackheart and his nemesis, Sir Ambrosius Goldenlion really solidifies what kind of morality these characters have as well. From the beginning Goldenlion was supposed to be the good guy, but we find out he hurt Blackheart in a joust during Knight School. His malicious action is brought up again a few times in the story, mostly through Blackheart's resentment, until we find out that Goldenlion was told by the Institution that he needs to maim Blackheart in order to win. We never find out why, other than an obvious assumption that they needed a bad guy and Blackheart would be the fall guy.
As for Nimona, we get a tiny bit about her back story but we don't learn a lot about her. She's evil, she can shapeshift, and she can also heal very quickly. As to why, it's explained a little when we find out that Nimona's abilities are altered when she is exposed to a new type of energy. Aside from how or why, or who did this to her, we don't get much other than she was previously locked up. Her anger is also not really explained, other than obvious assumption.
The entire story is a nice short story, but there was a lot to be desired with wanting more information on Nimona. I think Stevenson did a good job at managing the information she put in, but even a little more explanation on what happened when Nimona was originally locked up or why the Institution was corrupt would have made the story a little more interesting.
